A reliable partner will only benefit from your attentiveness, not a reliable one – disappears at the verification stage.

Exhibitions in China are not only a platform for meeting suppliers and manufacturers, but also a place where agents and intermediaries work. They can be found in halls, on stands and even in corridors. They approach visitors, hand out booklets, talk about their “big company” and offer to help organize supplies.

Sometimes these are really reliable partners, but sometimes behind the high-profile promises hide “one-day” or companies without experience. How do you know if you should work with such agents?

Why Exhibitors Are So Active

  • Competition for the customer. Many companies are just entering the market and looking for the first customers.
  • Direct contact. At the exhibition you can quickly meet and exchange business cards.
  • Trust effect. If an agent works under the guise of an exhibition, it seems that this is a guarantee of reliability. But that's not always the case.

Pros of working with agents found at exhibitions

  1. Quick access to services. You can immediately discuss the conditions, ask questions, see a person “live”.
  2. New contacts. Sometimes it is at the exhibition that you can find a partner who is not written about on the Internet.
  3. Flexibility. Young companies are ready to meet the client, make discounts and offer additional services.

Cons and risks

  1. Lack of experience. Some companies are just getting started, but claim "dozens of years of practice."
  2. Non-compliance. The agent promises escort, logistics, inspections, and in the end does not cope.
  3. False information. Booklets may include “office photos” that turn out to be coworking, and “employee staff” assembled from the founder’s friends.

How to check on these agents

1. Banking data

  • Find out how long the company has been around.
  • Ask for a bank statement or financial history.

2. Customs bases

  • Check if the company actually shipped the goods.
  • What countries and products do you work with?
  • This is the most reliable indicator of practical experience.

3. Reputation

  • Ask for references.
  • It is better if they are not “on the booklet”, but from your friends or partners who have already worked with this company.

4. Team.

  • Check who's really working.
  • Do not trust a beautiful photo from the office without confirmation.

5. Office and infrastructure

  • Some rent coworking for a few hours a week.
  • If possible, come and see it in person.

Working with agents found at exhibitions can be helpful, but requires verification.

  • The strength is quick contact and new opportunities.
  • The weak side is the risk of running into companies without experience or resources.

The main principle: trust, but always check. Use the recommendations of colleagues, check documents and do not conclude contracts “on the go”. A reliable partner will only benefit from your attentiveness, not a reliable one – disappears at the verification stage.
