What is a packing sheet
Packing List (PL) is one of the key documents in international trade and logistics. It accompanies each cargo and contains a detailed description of the contents of the shipment. Without it, it is impossible to correctly pass customs clearance, organize transportation, conduct acceptance or submit documents to the bank under a letter of credit.
We will understand what the packaging list includes, who makes it, why it is needed and what risks are associated with its absence or incorrect filling.
What is a packing sheet
Packaging sheet This is a document containing comprehensive information about each packing unit of cargo:
- its contents,
- weight
- size
- marking,
- and quantity.
In fact, this is a detailed “content inventory” of the delivery. The document is issued for each consignment of goods and is attached to the export documentation.
The main functions of the packing sheet
- Provides accurate accounting of goods during loading and unloading
- It is the basis for customs inspection
- Used by banks with a letter of credit form of payment
- Allows the recipient to verify the completeness of the delivery
- Required for claims in case of loss or damage to cargo
What includes the packaging sheet
Mandatory elements:
- Packaging sheet number date
- Invoice numberto which the document is linked
- Information about sender and recipient
- Description of goods: name, article, purpose
- Packaging units: type (box, pallet, bag, etc.), number of seats
- Brutto/net weight of each unit
- Packaging sizes (if possible)
- Total number, volume, weight
In addition (at the request of the logistician, customs, buyer):
- Marking packing unit
- Serial numbers
- Container/machine number
- Signature and seal sender
Who makes the packing sheet
Usually the packaging list is issued by the seller (exporter). However, there are exceptions:
- When shipped through a logistics companyPackaging list can be made by the warehouse operator or freight forwarder based on the data of the supplier.
- Consolidation of cargoPackaging list prepares the consolidation agent for each order separately.
Important: Responsibility for the accuracy of information always remains with the sender.

Where the packing sheet is used
In logistics:
- when loading the goods;
- to control the integrity of the packaging;

Customs:

- to determine the HS code.
In bank accounts:
- calculating letter of credit or factoring;
- as an appendix to a commercial invoice.

Recommendations for design
- Use it. uniformity for all deliveries;
- Number all packing places and specify the numbers in the sheet;
- Try hard. separately indicate gross and net;
- Don't forget. logistician Freight forwarder: they often require their own form.
Packing list is not just a formality. This is an important document without which:
- There will be no international delivery.
- No logistics operator will accept the goods,
- The correct customs clearance will not be completed.
